My name is Michael and I've been playing piano for as long as I can remember.
I started with traditional piano lessons and played music by Bach, Mozart, and Chopin, just like many of you.
Eventually I became interested in jazz, especially pianists like Bill Evans, Gene Harris, and Keith Jarrett, but because I was already taking classical piano lessons, I had to learn on my own. Just in the past few years I've had the privilege of performing with the University of North Texas One O'Clock band, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra, to name a few, as well as amazing colleagues in the Dallas/Fort Worth jazz scene where I live. I've earned degrees in classical and jazz piano performance from the University of North Texas, and even recently I was the winner of the inaugural Ravenscroft Jazz Piano Competition.
Throughout my journey as a jazz pianist, I've had the great opportunity to help other pianists become improvisers and to start playing jazz, and guess what the #1 thing I've learned is...?
👉 You don't need to learn every chord voicing, every scale or mode, or transcribe every solo that [insert favorite jazz pianist] ever played to be able to enjoy playing jazz and love your own playing...
